While in DC earlier this week, Tim and I attended a seminar at Georgetown University entitled, “Bread, Politics, and Development,” which focused on the role of government subsidized bread in society. In Jordan and Egypt, approximately 70% of residents receive bread subsidies. That is a lot of folks. (I asked if there was social mobility within these countries, or are the residents just “stuck” dependent on subsidized bread to survive - hoping students in the room would understand the connection). Could you imagine having to wait in a line wrapped around a building for basic nourishment? While Egypt is technically considered a former socialist state, it is still haunted by its ghosts. Socialism does not work. Capitalism works. Thank you to the current and visiting professors at Georgetown for coordinating this insightful experience. #Wadsworth
